The City Police Commissioner of Ernakulam on Tuesday placed junior sub-inspector K Saiju under suspension for assaulting a lawyer.
Saiju was alleged to have assaulted one advocate Srinath CV and his friend while they were standing near a shop taking cover from rain on July 12.
A complaint was filed by the lawyer alleging that Saiju and four other police officers assaulted them with lathis, slapped them, hurled abuses, and took them to the Ernakulam Central police station and proceeded to illegally detain them. It was also alleged that the officers had confiscated Srinath’s phone and deleted a video he had grabbed of the incident before returning it to him.
According to the order of the proceedings of the Inspector General and Commissioner of Police, an inquiry conducted into the incident revealed serious lapses on the part of sub-inspector Saiju.
Therefore, the Commissioner of Police passed the order suspending Saiju, pending disciplinary proceedings.
According to a notice issued earlier today by the Kerela High Court Advocates Association, the same was communicated by Director General of Prosecution, Senior Advocate TA Shaji, to the Grievance Redressal Committee chaired by Acting Chief Justice Alexander Thomas.
The Committee recorded the same and resolved to give liberty to recourse to appropriate legal remedies.
